Basically the same story as the original (see above), this overblown color version still has the same wonderful music, but that's where the similarity ends. None of the players in this remake compare with the first ones, and even though it is in color and Panavision, it seems older and
stodgier than its 1938 predecessor. Producer-director-writer Stone, who is so good when it comes to suspense films (THE LAST VOYAGE), sinks deep in a morass of rich Viennese
schlag on this one. The dialog is stilted, the performances mannered, and in the final analysis this version of THE GREAT
WALTZ is better listened to than watched.
