The Great Locomotive Chase: Review

A Civil War picture from Disney in which battles take a back seat to almost non-stop action. Parker is a Union soldier who, with a small band of men, tries to get into Confederate territory and destroy railway supply lines. He and his men board a locomotive and wait for the appropriate time to take it over. They are pursued by Hunter, a determined conductor who takes off after them via a handcar and then procures a locomotive for himself. Soon a full-steam chase is in progress, with enough twists and turns to keep everyone interested. The finale has Parker brought to trial and awaiting execution, but (small consolation) he has gained the respect of his pursuers. Photographed in CinemaScope, THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE takes advantage of its wide screen. In the same way Edwin S. Porter did in his silent short THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, the breathtaking massiveness of the thundering locomotive rips through the theater as it passes from one side of the frame to the other--an effect not possible during a television viewing. Walt Disney, himself a train fanatic, supervised production on weekends when not too busy with the construction of his California amusement park, Disneyland. leave a comment
