In a pre-WWI garrison town, Philipe wagers that he can seduce a sophisticated beauty before he goes off on maneuvers for the summer. Drawing the name of his quarry from a hat, he begins his conquest of Morgan, a pretty, divorced milliner. Philipe wins the bet, but falls in love in the
process. Not surprisingly, the great French director Clair has again put romance at the center of his film, but this time around he has approached his subject with more gravity than usual. Working in color for the first time, Clair invests the film with an impressive atmospheric elegance.
