The Golden Compass topped the weekend box office with $26.1 million a take described as "modest" when compared to the initial hauls of peers such as Lord of the Rings ($47.2 million) and Chronicles of Narnia ($65.6 mil). Enchanted placed second with $10.7 million.Rounding out the top five were This Christmas ($5 mil), Fred Claus ($4.7 mil) and Beowulf ($4.4 mil). In limited release, the largely hailed Juno averaged a huge $60,016 per screen, while Atonement averaged $25,528.
