The Golden Arrow: Review
Lightweight comedy with Davis as a cafeteria worker who is hired by a cosmetics company to pose as an heiress for publicity purposes. A rumor starts that the "heiress" is about to marry Lebedeff, a famous, if poverty-tricken, count. This irks Hughes, who really wants to marry Lebedeff, so she engages a private detective to find out Davis' real background. Meanwhile, reporter Brent, in an interview with Davis, is told she wants no business with fortune-hunters. He proposes a marriage of convenience; she'll be free to make the social scene without worry of men and he'll be wealthy enough to write a novel. She agrees and a marriage takes place, but soon Brent tires of being excess baggage and runs off to Hughes in revenge. Hughes tells him the truth about Davis, and, realizing where his true love lies, he returns to her. This light film is competently directed and well acted, but nothing special. Being forced by Warners to make THE GOLDEN ARROW after the successes of THE PETRIFIED FOREST and OF HUMAN BONDAGE embittered Davis, who felt the lighter material was below her talents, and she began a long fight with the studio to get better scripts.
