Duggan is a general who has political ambitions and is willing to sacrifice his troops in the process. Pretty routine stuff that screen-writer Peckinpah also dealt with that year in his direction of MAJOR DUNDEE. The large supporting cast is terrific. Caan is good as a stubborn recruit,
and veteran character actor Pickens provides his usual comic relief. Though the direction is uninspired, the film is greatly enhanced by the photography of veteran cameraman Howe. The battle sequences are excellent and there's a nice use of slow zooms.
