The Girls

1969, Movie, NR, 100 mins

A touring threatrical company performing Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" serves as the backdrop for this feminist drama exploring the roles and directions of the three female leads. Bibi Andersson's husband has two mistresses; Harriet Andersson's lover will not marry her; and Lindblom's husband dutifully cares for her children. All three, however, find themselves looking for a way to cope with their dilemmas and anxieties. If you like strong feminist statements, heavy symbolism, and a reliance on flashbacks, this one's for you. Released in Sweden in 1969. (In Swedish; English subtitles.)
