The Girl From Jones Beach: Review

Reagan proves himself an amiable farceur in this lightweight film about a famous illustrator (no doubt patterned after popular artists Petty and Vargas) who needs to find the perfect woman. He's been drawing women for quite some time, and a TV station offers to put him and his model on the air. But Reagan doesn't have one model--they are a composite of several models he's used. When Reagan sees his dream girl (Mayo) in the flesh at Jones Beach, promoter Bracken (who mugs so much that it's ugly to watch) makes her an offer, but she declines. She works as a schoolteacher and is more involved with people's minds than their eyes. Reagan poses as a Czech immigrant, registers in Mayo's American history class to get closer to her, and delivers some thick-accented dialog that is very funny. Mayo soon recognizes Reagan for who he is, but continues her relationship with him as the mutual attraction grows. A local paper prints a picture of her in her bathing suit and the school board goes up in arms. They fire her and she takes them to court. Travers is the judge and he finds for Mayo. She and Reagan decide to get married, and he determines to use his artistic abilities for something other than the cheesecake for which he is famous. A cute film that did well at the box office, perhaps better than it should have. Mayo is lovely and plays well off Reagan. In one particular scene Bracken was so involved watching the women that he allegedly tripped Reagan by mistake, causing the future chief exec to fall and break a small bone in his back. The script by I.A.L. Diamond (working without Billy Wilder for a change) was filled with bright remarks and almost managed to overcome the ham acting of Bracken. leave a comment
