Middleton, the surly hero of this gold-rush drama, celebrates his impending nuggetless withdrawal from the icy territory. The debauchery of the departure ceremony leads to the apparent death of a local lawman, and Middleton is forced to flee to avoid prosecution. He falls in with a felon, Cowan, a well-fixed Englishman who wants to get further fixed and plans to get that way by robbing and murdering an elderly prospector whose panning has paid off.
