A modernist theodicy by British avant-garde director Derek Jarman, who employs New Testament imagery to allegorize the persecution of homosexuals and the decimation of the gay community by AIDS. Shot largely in Jarman's own seaside garden, this non-narrative film uses inexpensive but strikingly effective lab techniques to create a distinctive, deliberately artificial look--one frequently copied in music videos, e.g., REM's "Losing My Religion" and Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box." leave a comment
