The previous films in which country singer Kenny Rogers played the titular card player were less forced than this lumbering Western, which shoehorns the gamblin' man Brady Hawkes into the myth of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Hawkes (Rogers) takes a break from gambling to spruce the a ranch he won in a poker game, but that project quickly falls by the wayside when he sees a newspaper photo of Butch (Scott Paulin), Sundance, Kid (Brett Cullen) and the Wild Bunch gang.
