Charming, sentimental, and unique, THE FOUR POSTER is confined to the masterful acting talents of the husband and wife team of Harrison and Palmer, playing husband and wife, from the moment Harrison carries Palmer across the threshhold until their deaths. In between, we witness the emotional highlights of their marriage: the raising of their children, their son's tragic death in WW I, Harrison's flirtations and escapades, his success as a writer, and Palmer's faithful support of his dreams. The film is nevertheless sometimes stagy and claustrophobic; the master bedroom, with its ever-present four poster, dominates the story as the symbol of the marriage. Bridging the episodic scenes is clever animation suggesting the difficulties yet to come. Harrison and Palmer manage to sidestep boredom and predictability in brilliant performances. Worthwhile and enjoyable. Oscar nominated for Best Cinematography. leave a comment
