This war drama details the vicious repression suffered by the Italians after the Nazis occupied the country and the Italian army surrendered to the Allies. The people are forced to watch and cheer as an Italian sailor is brutally murdered. Soon after, all males between the ages of five and
fifty are rounded up and sent to slave labor camps. The people of Naples respond in a long and bloody revolt, forcing the Nazis to evacuate the city. Eventually, the Allies arrive and the city is liberated. The screenplay was nominated for an Oscar in 1963, and it was up for Best Foreign Film in
1962, but lost to SUNDAYS AND CYBELE.
