This action thriller's machinery grinds to a halt, sabotaged by a surfeit of double crosses and unsavory characters. Former US operative Jonathan Cold (Steven Seagal) is now selling his skills to the highest bidder, which disappoints his patriotic brother, embassy attache Sean Cold (Jeffrey Pierce). Jonathan's father, the US Ambassador to Poland, dies and Jonathan's Parisian client, Monsieur Marquet (Philip Dunbar), requests before Jonathan attends the funeral he pick up of a package for German industrialist Jerome von Aiken (Harry von Gorkum). Marquet is actually a go-between for von Aiken and the new Polish Ambassador, Jared Oliphant (Gary Raymond); Jonathan has no idea that the unscrupulous Oliphant and oily von Aiken once manufactured toxic bioweapons. Marquet's henchman, Dunoir (Max Ryan), and Jonathan locate the package in Versailles and must escape Danish agents who've been sent to slaughter them. Jonathan isn't surprised when the back-stabbing Dunoir kills Marquet, but he can't figure out who hired him to do so. Jonathan subsequently contacts Mrs. Von Aiken (Anna-Louise Plowman), who wants the coveted package to use as leverage in a custody battle with her husband. Mrs. Von Aiken's claim that her ex-lover was planning to expose Jerome von Aiken's criminal past, and the proof is in the package. Using all his dirty CIA tricks, Jonathan kills two assassins ordered to kill for the incriminating evidence. But Dunoir turns out to have nine lives and returns to try to eliminate Jonathan; caught between Mrs. Von Aiken and her husband, Jonathan may not live long enough to decipher the truth. Paunchy, squint-eyed icon Seagal no longer kickboxes with the ardor of his youth, and is badly served by a script that paints victims, anti-heroes and villains with the same cynical brush. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
