Hauntingly beautiful photography of the Arctic region is the highlight of this film, based on the ill-fated Andree expedition of 1897. Max von Sydow plays the explorer S.A. Andree, who attempts to fly a balloon to the North Pole despite numerous warnings of the dangers involved. After only three days in the air, Andree and his two assistants-- Nils Strindberg (Goran Stangertz), a descendent of Andree, and Knut Fraenkel (Sverre Anker Ousdal), a Norwegian athlete--crash into the frozen tundra.
