The beginning of Sirk's film is a character study of the disparate priests at St. Gregory Seminary. Boyer is the head of the seminary and a former criminal lawyer; Addy was a concert pianist torn between the priesthood and his music. Demarest is the monsignor inclined to challenge the Jesuits' faith at every opportunity. The film moves on to a "miraculous" event and its repercussions when a bedridden priest, Warner, suddenly finds that he has regained the use of his legs. Skeptical, Boyer discovers that an agnostic town doctor, Bettger, used the power of suggestion to enable Warner to walk. The film ends with a true miracle when the crippled Rush rises from her wheelchair. This end comes as something of a letdown in an otherwise very engaging film. Sirk examines themes that reappear in most of his works: religion and the foggy dividing line between the rational and the irrational. leave a comment
