The Firefly: Review

This is a somewhat long and unsatisfying lensing of the 1912 Rudolf Friml operetta, which starred Emma Trentini and Henry Vogel on Broadway. Jeannette MacDonald stars here as Nina Maria, aka the "Mosca del Fuego" (Firefly), a singer in a Madrid cafe in 1808. Singing is only her cover job, however; she is actually a secret agent working for the Marquis DeMelito (Douglass Dumbrille), an advisor to King Ferdinand. Napoleon is planning to invade Spain, and Nina Maria must discover his plans. She becomes friendly with Col. DeRougemont (Warren William), one of Napoleon's confidantes, tries to enlist Diego Manrique de Lara (Allan Jones) in her cause before learning he is also in the Little Corporal's employ, and is nearly executed before love and song straighten it all out. MacDonald wanted to rid herself of costar Nelson Eddy and do a solo shot, but Jones distinguished himself and took the reviews with his rendition of the hit "Donkey Serenade." MacDonald does pleasantly surprise with some excellent dancing to complement her glorious voice, and in one tune, "When a Maid Comes Knocking at Your Heart," she plays her own piano accompaniment. Nonetheless, this lavish film with what seems like thousands of extras is, ultimately, a tuneful bore. Songs: "Giannina Mia" (lyrics by Harbach), "Love Is Like a Firefly," "English March," "A Woman's Kiss" (lyrics by Wright and Forrest), "He Who Loves and Runs Away" (lyrics by Gus Kahn), "Sympathy" (lyrics by Kahn and Harbach), "When a Maid Comes Knocking At Your Heart," and "When The Wine Is Full of Fire." leave a comment
