A contrived story involves an impoverished mother, von Tasnady, who gives up her child for adoption in order to go to America with her husband. The child is adopted by an orchestra conductor, Birgel, and his wife, Dagover. After her husband commits suicide, von Tasnady returns to Germany
and gets herself employed as the child's nurse. Dagover, feeling guilty over her numerous affairs, kills herself. Birgel and von Tasnady are accused of murder but are exonerated and marry at the film's end.
