November 19, 2006: Big Brother's Listening

I had a feeling Brad Anderson's Masters of Horror entry, Sounds Like, would be grim. Anderson's critically acclaimed low-budget thriller, Session 9, remains one of the most grim and cerebrally horrifying movies I've ever seen. Whenever I recommend Session 9, I describe it as one of those movies that made me hear things at night. Only two other movies to date have had that effect on me: The Exorcist and The Blair Witch Project. The Exorcist stands out as way more "in the face" (in more ways than pea soup) of the three, but Blair Witch and Session 9 both delivered that subtle, "crawl in the brain and haunt me for days" effect, which is my favorite kind of horror.I believe the most powerful link between these three films is the masterful use of sound, both subliminal and overt. It's no surprise that The Exorcist is known for using subliminal sound throughout the film, as well as huge contrasts between silence and audio assault to increase the feeling of terror and dread. For me, the mo... read more

Linda Blair: How I Exorcised Supernatural's Demons

Linda Blair, Supernatural

Supernatural fans are in for a special post-Halloween treat when horror-movie legend Linda Blair guest-stars on this week's episode (tonight at 9 pm, on the CW). Now, just to be clear, even though she did star in The Exorcist and this show does often deal with demons, Blair is not playing an otherworldly baddie. In fact, her character is a nonbeliever detective who has a bit of a run-in with the Winchester boys. TVGuide.com invited the delightful actress to share some details about her guest gig, and also to fill us in on the cause that is so close to her heart. TVGuide.com: Hi, how have you been doing? Linda Blair: I'm fine. But I run a dog rescue, and I just wish they were fine. Twenty years ago we di read more

If Tori Spelling's said it once,...

If Tori Spelling's said it once, she's said it a thousand times: She has no beef with her former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Shannen Doherty. Well, her “true life” VH1 comedy So noTORIous begs to differ. In this Sunday's episode, a terrified Tori hides inside a sex shop to avoid a run-in with her nemesis, er, bestest friend. Later, she flashes back to her 90210 days and Doherty — I'm quoting directly from the script here — appears as a "gigantic, towering shadow" and talks like “Linda Blair in The Exorcist.” Spelling declined to comment, but a source close to So noTORIous insists the bit merely "plays off the joke that everybody thinks they don't get along. The show is all about poking fun at rumors." But will Doherty be laughing? Her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, says her client would be "very, very hurt" by such a monstrous portrayal, especially after Spelling personally invited her to make a cameo. "Tori read more

Timberlake's Ex Is Out for Blood

Jenna Dewan is Tamara

Revenge has a new name (and a sssmokin' body). Tamara, starring music-video-dancer-turned-actress Jenna Dewan and from the creator of Final Destination, is a new horror film now playing at a theater near you. Oh, and did we mention that revenge smells nice and flowery, too? Actually, that's just the fragrance (not Curious, you can pretty much bet) worn by Justin Timberlake's post-Britney girlfriend as she sits down for a one-on-one with TVGuide.com.

TVGuide.com: So the moral of this movie is what Mom always told us: "Don't pick on the drab girl who's into the occult or else she'll clean up nice and unleash on you a load of hurt."
Jenna Dewan:
Yes, and we like that. That's what I love about the movie, is that it does have a big moral to it — "You reap w read more

In the Disney movie Aladdin, ...

Naughty, naughty!: Aladdin

Question: In the Disney movie Aladdin, there's a scene in which Aladdin is on Jasmin's balcony, and when you turn the volume up, you can hear him say, "Take off your clothes...." What's the true story behind this big oops?

Answer: The true story is that it isn't true. This persistent rumor has been winging its way around the Internet ever since the movie was released in 1992. Similar stories about a minister with a visible erection in The Little Mermaid (1989) and a dust cloud in The Lion King (1994) that spells out the word "SEX" have proved equally durable. Animators are notorious pranksters, and of the three rumors, I find the one about The Lion King least unbelievable, if only because having been told that the letters are there, it's hard not to see them. But I immediately have to qualify that statement by pointin read more
