An engaging, well-crafted film about a group of Swedish peasants who migrate to America in the mid-19th century. One of the best films to show the tribulations, bravery and faith of the people who helped build this country. The film is split into three parts: the departure from Sweden, the
voyage over and the journey to Minnesota. The acting is superb by all cast members, but some might be put off by the film's length. The tone is lyrical, and the photography (by director Troell) gives an added dimension. Nominated by the Academy for Best Foreign Film of 1971, it also earned
nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Direction and Best Screenplay in 1972. The sequel is THE NEW LAND.
