Having retired as an assassin for a secret organization, Eastwood leads a simple existence as an art history professor at a university. Blackmailed by the unscrupulous head of the organization, he agrees to perform one final "sanction." The victim's identity is not known, but he will be one of the three men attempting to scale the Eiger, a brutal mountain in the Swiss Alps. Eastwood, a famous climber, will have to kill him during the excursion. As seen in FIREFOX as well as THE EIGER SANCTION, Eastwood is not very deft at creating an intriguing, exciting tale of international espionage. Unlike his brilliant work in directing westerns, Eastwood falls victim to stodgy pacing and ludicrous acting. THE EIGER SANCTION does, however, contain some brilliant, breathtaking mountaineering sequences in which Eastwood did his own stunt work. The icy, treacherous climb up the Eiger is depicted in brutally realistic and thrilling ways. Eastwood's impersonal style in the majority of the film, however, takes away the intense energy he can give a movie when directing, as can be seen in THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES; HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER; and HEARTBREAK RIDGE. leave a comment
