Based on Willard Mack's popular play of the same title, this costume romance was relocated from Mexico to the fictitious Costa Roja ("somewhere on the Mediterranean Coast"), but trades shamelessly on hot-blooded Latin stereotypes. Dance-hall girl Dolores (Norma Talmadge), who goes by the stage name "The Dove," loves gambler Johnny Powell (Gilbert Roland). Wealthy playboy Don Jose Maria y Sandoval (Noah Beary) has the hots for Dolores, and arranges to have Johnny framed on a charge of murder. True-blue Dolores promises she will do anything to save him, and offers to marry Don Jose if he will promise to set Johnny free. He agrees, but on the eve of the wedding Johnny breaks out of jail and comes to claim his love. He's recaptured and finds himself in front of a firing squad under the command of his romantic rival. Spunky Dolores makes one last desperate effort to save Johnny, showing up at the prison and shaming Don Jose into letting both of them go free. Though criticized for being a slow and unconvincing piece of melodrama, THE DOVE was praised for its technical accomplishments, particularly the glass matte painting that made it appear to take place in some exotic Latin locale. Norma Talmadge -- one of three sisters, all actresses -- was one of the most popular stars of the silent era: She had been in films since 1910 and specialized in long-suffering romantic heroines. THE DOVE was one of her last pictures; like many of the silent greats, Talmadge's career did not survive the transition to sound films. Director Roland West also retired from filmmaking shortly after THE DOVE, making only three more features. leave a comment
