THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE is a slight, lyrical fable that benefits enormously from the charm of its star, Cannes award-winner Irene Jacob.
The film introduces us to two women, both played by Jacob. Polish Veronika leaves her provincial home town and family for the city of Krakow, where she is offered a place to study singing at a prestigious music school; after suffering chest pains, she is stricken and dies onstage during her first
public performance. The action then shifts to Paris, where the French Veronique abruptly, and without explanation, abandons her own ambitions of becoming a professional singer to pursue a more modest career as an elementary school...
