A lavish British epic centering on two lovers, Brook and Carroll, in 18th-century Denmark. Brook is a medic who attends a drunken king in Hamburg. The king brings the doctor back to Denmark to live a life of royalty. It is here that he meets the Queen, played in a plebian fashion by
Carroll, and they fall in love. The vindictive Queen Mother catches Brook in the royal boudoir and has them both imprisoned. Brook arranges for the Queen's escape. She refuses, vowing to stay with him until the end. A spectacle, reportedly costing $500,000, overflowing with elaborate sets and
costumes, but with a script so shallow it leaves no room for compassion.
