Engrossing drama loosely based on the life of Ernst Udet, the highest ranking German ace to survive WW I only to kill himself on the eve of WW II in horror over his role in Nazi rearmament. Jurgens is the Luftwaffe general here, caught in the middle between his loyalty to his country and
his comrades and the growing revulsion he feels toward the Nazis and the war. In the end, when he crashes a new bomber rather than let it be used to prolong the war, the Nazis proclaim him a hero and martyr to the Reich. The film gets a bit talky at times but is still worth seeing.
