Another rigorous--and unusually watchable--exercise in cinematic discipline by Bresson, the master of the minimal. The story, the end of which Bresson reveals immediately, depicts young Monnier drifting through politics, religion, and finally to suicide. The actors are all nonprofessionals
who don't so much act as move around and blankly state their lines to the director's intricate commands. The best introduction (along with LANCELOT DU LAC) to the work of one of film's greatest thinkers.
