Joe Leland (Sinatra) is a top New York City detective investigating the mutilation and murder of a homosexual (Inman). He arrests the victim's former roommate (Musante) for the crime, and the suspect is tried, convicted and executed. But the case haunts Sinatra because he allowed himself to blindly railroad Musante into a confession for the sake of a promotion. Ironically, another case leads Sinatra to the real killer, and he soon finds himself embroiled in a political scandal that could rock New York City. Now somewhat dated because of its misguidedly "enlightened" attitude toward homosexuality, this film is engrossing nonetheless because of its superb cast. Screenwriter Abby Mann took a few liberties with Thorp's trashy novel, but the changes were an improvement. Look for Robert Duvall in a small role. leave a comment
