Misery loves company in this minor but ingenious fright flick about the ultimate comeback. Production problems plague neophyte filmmaker David (Eric Clawson) and his producer/special effects designer, Paul (Brett Beardslee), as they launch their premier project. Ever the opportunist, Paul replaces his sister Shelly (Wendy Speake), the film's original leading lady, with their sibling Nina (Kimberly Pullis), who's invested money in the project. As shooting commences at an abandoned sanitarium, the filmmakers stumble upon a photogenic laboratory. Paul doesn't realize that he's on the stomping ground of Dr. Eibon (Matt Stephens), who conducted reincarnation experiments in hopes of curing his gravely ill wife. Eager to stretch their budget, Paul's company scours the area for props and unseals a doorway to the "Other World." To achieve a Frankenstein-ish effect, the crew juices up a casket that stands near the imposing entrance-way. Once the sparks fly, leading man Eric (Benjamin P. Morris) gets sucked into this portal for the dead and the mad scientist's gateway to the afterlife is activated. The zombies who pour out don't care much about indie film production, but they love to snack on cast and crew. After being bitten, each victim joins the ghoulish brigade and seeks fresh meat. Can anyone escape the ranks of the netherworld as the dead outflank the living? Spoofing the ambitions of terror-movie tyros, this modest treat delivers a few solid frissons and jolts audience into occasional nervous laughter with its knowing rehash of re-animation staples. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
