A rite-of-passage film that sets a young boy, Grimes, against the murderous ways of the West. After convincing hard-edged trail boss Bush to take him along on a cattle drive from Texas to Colorado, the soft-skinned Grimes is exposed to the leathering effects of the post-Civil War era.
Great efforts are made to establish historic authenticity and detail in Richards' first film. Unfortunately, not enough time was spent on the script, and result is an occasional less-than-satisfactory impression. An interesting film that is a must for western buffs.
