Six months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Continental Army faces imminent surrender to the Crown's troops. Reenforced by superior Hessian mercenaries, the Brits stand poised to seize Philadelphia. At this decisive juncture, George Washington (Jeff Daniels) surveys his rag-tag platoons and overrides the objections of his generals. With less than unconditional support from his loyal officers like Glover (Sebastian Roche) and Alexander Hamilton (Steven McCarthy), Washington gambles on a daring attack on Trenton, New Jersey. Before the Delaware River has frozen over, the future president and his soldiers cross in commandeered foundry boats under the cover of darkness, hoping that the Hessian troupes will be preoccupied with Christmas celebrations. Although the hazardous undertaking takes longer than expected, the Battle of Trenton marks a turning point in the War of Independence. Reminiscent of one of those quaint, yearly reenactments commemorating famous battles, this tableaux vivant rarely sputters to dramatic life. Presenting a mere schoolbook version of the facts that barely scratches the surface of Washington's desperate attempt to turn the tide against the awesome British army, this static drama is about as exciting as a Triple A tourist guide. Watching this impeccable-looking production, one that's best appreciated by military strategists, you're bound to wonder why everyone's uniforms are so unsullied. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
