A clever Renoir film, with a decidedly anti-capitalist message. Lefevre is a meek author of French novels about the American West whose avaricious boss, Berry, cheats him out of his earnings. Berry embezzles the company funds, flees, and is later reported dead in a train wreck. The employees of the publishing house are overjoyed and form a cooperative that achieves great success with Lefevre's "Arizona Jim" series. He falls in love with a woman from a neighboring laundry, but then Berry returns (he survived the wreck and took the clothes of a priest) and demands a share in the company's newfound prosperity. Should Lefevre kill the villain? One of Jean Renoir's best films, THE CRIME OF MONSIEUR LANGE is also one of the most obvious examples of his Front Populaire period of filmmaking--reflecting the social politics of its day and the belief that a collective could effectively overthrow a tyranny. This wonderfully entertaining and sharply scripted film is hampered by its poor sound quality, a result of Renoir's meager production budget. leave a comment
