Aykroyd is an antisocial con who got himself out of jail and into a mental facility by eating paint chips and licking the dust off radiators. One of the doctors, however, the ineffectual Clennon, is sure Burns is not really crazy and decides to reward him for his disruptive antics by packing him off to a maximum-security prison. Meanwhile, in Beverly Hills, doctor Grodin, radio call-in-show personality and psychiatrist to the very rich, has had a nervous breakdown and must take a lengthy vacation. While he is away, a replacement will take over his million-dollar-a-year practice and radio show. The replacement has to be somewhat incompetent--so Clennon, with his perfectly mediocre credentials, is selected. The call to Clennon, however, is intercepted by Ackroyd, who escapes from the hospital and arrives in Los Angeles, impersonating the doctor. Once there, he insists on a $200,000 cash advance and makes plans to escape to Mexico. THE COUCH TRIP, offers some funny moments but never reaches its potential. The script is full of incredible coincidences and heavy-handed plot devices, and there is no sense of continuity. Although Aykroyd is good in a tailor-made role, Grodin once again displays his impeccable comic timing. The rest of the cast is equally enjoyable (Matthau mugs a bit too much, however, as a depressed pal of Ackropyd's who sees through the con man's scheme). The film's satirical touches, aimed at the psychiatric profession and Beverly Hills values, are recycled from a dozen better movies. THE COUCH TRIP has no particular personality of its own, and sometimes seems to be just going through the motions. Although generally enjoyable to watch, it keeps reminding the audience of how funny it could have been. leave a comment
