Good adaptation of Thomas Mann's last novel (in turn based on one of his early short stories) has Bucholz as a young man who avoids being drafted into the German army and makes his way to Paris, where he takes a job as elevator operator in a hotel. A number of women (and at least one
man) take a romantic interest in the young lad, who seems to be more interested in discussing anthropology. It gets a little dull toward the second half but is well worth checking out.
