Three Oscar nominations were awarded (Eggar, Wyler, Mann and Kohn), but no statuettes were given to this thriller that could have been one of the best were it not for sluggish direction. Stamp is a wimpy bank clerk with a dull life that is only relieved by his collection of butterflies. He falls in love with Eggar, a lovely art student, and wishes she would return the feelings, but she is frankly repulsed by his attentions.
