When shy and somewhat unstable Simmons is accused of murdering the handyman who worked for her guardians (Jones and Dresdel), Howard, having been fired from his job in the British Secret Service, comes to her aid. Convinced that Simmons is innocent, he helps her escape from jail and the two flee to Liverpool where they plan to stow away on a ship bound for Mexico. Aware of the plans, the police follow them, hoping to nab the real killer, for they, too, are convinced of Simmons's innocence. When Simmons's fatherlike guardian Jones approaches them in Liverpool, Howard and the girl become aware of his homicidal psychosis and realize that he and his equally demented wife killed the worker and convinced poor Simmons that she was the guilty one. The police arrive in the nick of time and capture Jones before he can do any more harm. Suspenseful, exciting drama, rich with character and given an imposing, dark, yet hauntingly romantic look by master cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth. An interestingly cast romantic duo, Simmons and Howard weave a passionate spell as the young couple whose fate is in question. leave a comment
