This is supposed to be a serious look at the first man to go to Denmark to have a sex-change operation. However, the acting leans toward a campiness that draws laughs in the wrong places. Born with three times the normal hormones, we see Jorgensen (Lehman), age seven, being picked on by other boys because he would rather play with dolls than footballs. The grown Jorgensen (Hansen) does a stint in the Army, where he cringes at bayoneting dummies. He later has an unsatisfactory encounter with a prostitute. Eventually, as an advertising photographer, Jorgensen is hit on by a homosexual account executive. He is so upset he tries to jump off a bridge but is thwarted. Finally he goes to Denmark for the first sex-change operation. The movie comes in for a lot of laughs after the operation is performed and George becomes Christine, a name he adopts from a dead cousin. Hansen looks like a broad-shouldered queen in drag; nobody could ever buy him as a woman. leave a comment
