Buddy Holly didn't live very long. His life ended in a snowstorm with The Big Bopper and Richie Valens in 1959. Their plane went down, and the event was later eulogized in Don McLean's song "American Pie." How much of a movie could be made about a young man who never survived his early twenties? The answer is . . . a whole lot! Busey is perfect as Holly, and all the small roles are well cast. The story only spans a few years, from Holly's youth in Lubbock to his death. Lubbock is one of those quiet and conservative towns, and Holly was chastised for his descent into rock and roll. The music was too "black" for the community's white sensibilities. Holly paid them no mind, started writing and recording, and was a star before he had to shave more than three times a week. If you are old enough to remember Buddy and The Crickets and their string of hits, you'll love this film. Busey did all his own singing and playing, as did Martin and Stroud as The Crickets, providing a welcome sense of realism. Busey's performance is terrific. It won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, although he lost to Jon Voight for COMING HOME. The film did win an Academy Award for best scoring, and was also nominated for Best Sound. Songs include "That'll Be the Day," "Peggy Sue," "Every Day," "Oh Boy"--all written by Holly and sung by Busey. leave a comment
