THE BUCCANEER is a lackluster remake of the 1938 Cecil B. De Mille film of the same name, this time starring Yul Brynner (with a full head of hair) as the pirate Jean Lafitte, who comes to the aid of General Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) when the British attack New Orleans during the
War of 1812. In the process, Lafitte falls toupee-over-heels in love with Annette Claiborne (Inger Stevens), the daughter of William Claiborne, first governor of Louisiana. Brynner, dashing and powerful as the pirate Lafitte, plays his character with a fair amount of historical accuracy--not as a
wild swashbuckler but as a debonair patriot who staunchly denied all charges of piracy....
