Casting and fine performances make this a truly distinguished film, even if the subject matter, which deals with the home life and internal workings of the Mafia, sometimes revolts in its straining after the sympathy of the viewer. Douglas is a middle-aged career crook, dedicated to the old ways of the Mafia, who finds himself at odds with his ambitious younger brother, Cord. When Cord broaches plans for Douglas to become a "modern" criminal by using sophisticated techniques of big business--stock control of companies, legitimate investments, and particularly a takeover of the electronics and space industry--Douglas vetoes the plan.
