First musical to win Academy Award reeks of mothballs, but is undeniably the basis of perhaps a hundred others. At least there's an old curiosity shoppe charm and a few classic tunes: "You Were Meant for Me" and the title tune (Brown and Freed--Freed would go on to head the musical production unit at MGM, the biggest of all time, and produce all the Garland classics, among many others), plus Cohan's "Give My Regards to Broadway". Surprisingly, a remake, TWO GIRLS ON BROADWAY, was inferior. Some sequences originally filmed in Technicolor, this was the first sound picture shown all over. leave a comment
