A quality production, with little dialog, THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY is set in Lima, Peru, in 1714. A worn-out bridge gives way, plunging five people to their deaths. The townspeople rush to church in terror thinking that St. Louis, patron saint of the ancient bridge, has deserted them.
They see the collapsing of the bridge as punishment for their sins. In the forefront of wickedness is Lily Damita, a Spanish country dancer, courtesan, and social climber with a love 'em and leave 'em attitude. Excellent production supports excellent acting. Dialog is used only at the beginning
and the end of this early talkie. The film won an Oscar for Best Interior Decoration.
