Crawford, a less-than-virtuous cabaret singer, is invited by wealthy aristocrat Zucco to spend a Cinderella-like two weeks at an exclusive resort in the Tyrol. Hoping to convince his snobby friends that anyone can appear to be a member of the upper crust if provided with the correct trappings, Zucco introduces Crawford as a mysterious socialite, secretly knowing that he will expose her true identity as a common tramp to them at the end of the two weeks. At the resort, Crawford plays her role to the hilt, making gentleman Young fall in love with her. She also meets the Bohemian Tone, a village postman, who introduces Crawford to the simple wonders of nature. On the night that Zucco is to expose Crawford, she walks out in a sinful red dress, causing Young to abandon his plans of running off with her. Cast out by the elite, Crawford is saved from emotional despair by the ever-adoring Tone, who has apparently been aware of her shady past all along. This above average Crawford film has a pleasing "love should know no bounds" message at its heart. Tone's disinterest in consumerism and his appreciation of nature complement Zucco and company's stylish yet boring world. Crawford is very calm and assured as the young, cynical woman who finally realizes the love that exists in the world around her. leave a comment
