Johnson, an escaped convict with a weakness for alcohol, turns to his well-known lawyer brother Cotten for assistance in his attempt to cross the border into Mexico. Fearing a lack of respect from his well-to-do neighbors, Cotten passes Johnson off as an old acquaintance, not a brother. Disheartened by his brother's reluctance to accept him, Johnson turns to drink and tries to make it on his own.
