"You gotta have a gimmick," goes the old song, and it's as true for serial killer pictures as for burlesque acts. Let's face it, everyone's sick to death of the same old super-smart, super- fiendish, super-twisted killers leaving bloody trails of oh-so- clever clues for super-smart, super-obsessed detective types to unravel. This lurid thriller has all those things, of course, but it's also got a little twist: The clue-decoder, brilliant NYC forensic specialist Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington), is paraplegic. And that's why he needs the eyes, ears and legs of whip-smart rookie Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), who stumbled onto a distinctively butchered body and did such a bang-up job preserving the crime scene that Rhyme has her pulled off her regular duties to assist him. The killer abducts his victims in a yellow taxi and leaves a collection of peculiar scraps at the scene of each crime; all they seem to have in common is some vague link to old New York. Can Rhyme and his team put together the puzzle and stop the slaughter before egocentric NYPD muckety-muck Cheney (Michael Rooker) pulls them off the case? Efficiently directed by Philip Noyce and based on a novel by Jeffery Deaver, this gloomy fright machine wallows in several truly sadistic killings and climaxes in an ending of such sleazy preposterousness that it's almost worth the price of admission alone. You know Rhyme and the killer — whose identity is so tangential to the plot he might as well be the butler — must go mano a mano (the genre has rules) before it's all over; but given Rhyme's condition, the spectacle of the two men doing so is guaranteed to be something you've never seen before. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
