The Blue Max: Review
Offering some of the best WW I aerial footage ever committed to film, THE BLUE MAX stars George Peppard as Bruno Stachel, an ambitious German infantryman who escapes the trenches to become a fighter pilot. Like every other German flyboy, Bruno dreams of winning the "Blue Max" (named for ace Max Immelman), the highest honor his country can bestow upon a pilot. Utterly ruthless, he soon becomes an ace, but is never accepted by the other pilots, most of whom are members of the old Prussian aristocracy. Determined to overtake ace Willi Von Klugermann (Jeremy Kemp), he becomes increasingly more daring, and when not adding "kills" to his tally, Bruno scores with Countess Kaeti (Ursula Andress), the wife of Willi's uncle and commander (James Mason). Strange and overlong, THE BLUE MAX impressively captures the reality of war in the trenches and in the air, but is less interesting when the focus shifts to its relatively steamy bedroom affairs. THE BLUE MAX differs from so many war films in its portrayal of German war heroes not as the usual stereotypes but as ruthless opportunists more concerned with personal gain than patriotism.
