While not as ornate or visually attractive as its successor, this original version of THE BLUE LAGOON is surely more intelligent and less patently sexual. Simmons and Houston are teenagers who were shipwrecked as children on a lush, tropical island. They grow from children (ably played
by Stranks and Jones) to adults and, for the first few years, are accompanied by Purcell, in the role later played by Leo McKern. Neither one of the films is particularly exciting, despite the gorgeous locations and the sure-handed direction. Perhaps there are some stories better left unfilmed.
