A totally misleading title may have made this a flop at the box office because it had a lot to recommend it as a movie. Loren is a widow in a poor New York neighborhood who, quite rightly, blames herself for her gangster husband's death. She wanted material things and the late padrone sought to achieve them for her and was killed. Her son, Baird, is already into the criminal life and confined on a state farm. She meets Quinn, a widower with Balin as his daughter, and they fall in love. Balin is livid when she hears her father is going to marry "the gangster's widow" and locks herself in her room, hoping to convince her father to give up the idea. Loren is worried that Quinn will depart and that she and her son will not get the second chance at happiness she seeks so desperately. Baird escapes from the farm but he is found by Quinn who convinces him to return. Meanwhile, Loren successfully convinces Balin that she (Loren) is a good woman and will make Quinn a good wife. Loren won the Best Actress Award at the 1958 Venice Film Festival for this role, but it failed to ignite any large commercial receipts despite superb performances by both stars, tight direction by Ritt, and what appeared to be a semiautobiographical script from Joe Stefano, who went on to have enormous success with his screenplay for PSYCHO and his TV series "Outer Limits." leave a comment
