THE BIG TREES is a remake of the VALLEY OF THE GIANTS (1938) and it suffers by comparison. Everybody who lives in and around Eureka, California, and who has the slightest interest in the lumber business is against the religious sect that resides in the redwoods. Kirk Douglas, a lumberjack extraordinaire, is part of just one of three different factions that want the land the religious folks have settled. His greediness is eventually overcome by the love of Eve Miller, one of the zealots. This is a choppy and uneven picture with lousy dialog and worse performances. Douglas reputedly did this picture with no pay in order to get out of his contract with Jack Warner. This one spelled "Timber" at the box office. leave a comment
