Although the plot line is contrived and hopelessly cliched, THE BIG TOWN might at least have been an engaging celebration of old movie conventions. Instead, it is a strangely lifeless film that fails to interest despite the efforts of its solid cast. The story begins in the small town of Rockport, Indiana, in the late 1950s. J.C. Cullen (Matt Dillon), an apparently upstanding young man who works in an auto repair shop by day, spends his nights shooting craps. With amazing luck and a quick mind with which he instantly calculates the odds, Cullen proves to be a devastating gambler.
