This was the third time around for THE BELOVED VAGABOND's story and, hopefully, the last. While they shot this one in English, they were doing the same thing in French, so it had the distinction of being dull in two languages. Chevalier loves his boss's daughter, but when she decides to marry someone else, he quits his architectural job and goes back to France (which is one of the reasons Chevalier agreed to make the film after being off-screen for three years). Chevalier is traveling with Tester when they meet a gypsy woman (Lockwood) and form a strolling minstrel act with her. After a while, Chevalier realizes that Lockwood loves him, but before this can get any stickier, he tells her that he must go back to England at the end of summer. Back in Blighty, Chevalier learns that his beloved (Stockfeld) didn't get married and she'd like to take matters up with him again. It doesn't take Chevalier long to realize that she's a money-hungry, venal woman with whom he could never be happy, however, so he returns to France to find Lockwood and tell her he loves her. A few songs and some snappy patter don't save what, overall, is a weak effort. leave a comment
